Texas Automotive Maintenance | TX Preowned Car Dealer
You know it’s time to change your windshield wipers when they start skipping, splitting, streaking or squeaking. It’s important to stay on top of all your Texas automotive maintenance, especially your windshield wipers because they are important for driving visibility. It’s a scary thing to be stuck on the highway in Dallas during a downpour when your wipers aren’t functioning correctly!
As a general rule of thumb, windshield wipers should be replaced every six months to a year, or sooner if you notice a change in visibility. One way to remember to replace them is to make a habit of doing it on Groundhog Day–if the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow, you can expect 6 more weeks of driving
in wintry weather. Otherwise, you can expect 6 weeks of driving in spring’s rainshowers! Either way, it is around that time that having properly functioning wipers is necessary for safe driving in unpredictable weather conditions around Arlington.
There are a few signs to look for when inspecting your wipers that are indicative of the need for replacement. Check for any detachments or metal corrosion, as this means the wipers are old. Look for cracks, rips or uneven edges on the rubber squeegee. These are usually the cause for streaking, squeaking and skipping. If you try and bend the rubber squeegee and it feels a little stiff, more than likely it doesn’t conform to the shape of your windshield, also resulting in streaking. If you’ve checked all the above but still have compromised driving visibility, check to make sure the squeegee is securely fastened in the frame and that the wiper arm is properly installed on the wiper arm.
The reasons for wear and tear on wiper blades are the same as those that cause wear and tear on most things–nature’s elements. The sun, airborne debris and moisture all compromise the integrity of windshield wipers. Sand, dust, salt, rain and UV light weaken the wiper blades overtime, resulting in cracks and rips and then streaks and squeaks. In addition to environmental factors are those from the vehicle itself, such as oils from car waxes and exhaust.
While causes for wear and tear are inevitable, and therefore the need for replacement is as well, it’s an easy thing to check for and it’s a relatively cheap fix.
