The Mercedes-Benz GL class is a full-size SUV competing against vehicles such as Range Rover and the Cadillac Escalade. It is currently built in the USA, offers three rows of passenger seating, and can tow up to 7,500 pounds. It is definitely a luxury SUV with features and amenities to suit the most discriminating owners. The MB GL class is a cousin of the GLE class vehicles (formerly called ML) but the GLs add the third row of seats and about a foot in overall length. The GL class joins the rest of the G class to offer a choice of five SUVs to the marketplace — from largest to smallest they are the G, GL, GLE/ML, GLK/GLC, and the subcompact GLA.
The GL class was introduced in 2006 and the first generation was manufactured until 2013. It originally came in three trims; GL 450, GL 550, and GL 350 BlueTec. All were equipped with a 7-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GL 450 and 550 differed only a little in power output, but the GL 350 BlueTec (also known as GL 350 CDI in early years) offered the best towing option with its impressive 400 lb-ft of torque. There were few changes during the first generation, except for an improved infotainment system in 2009 and slight styling changes in 2010.
The next generation of the Mercedes-Benz GL class was introduced in 2013. The looks were freshened up and more significantly MB achieved weight reductions to help fuel efficiency ratings. Models included the GL 350 BlueTec 4Matic, a V-8 GL450, a more powerful GL550, and the totally maxed out GL63 AMG as the first AMG entry in the GL line. In 2015 the GL 450 got an engine change from the V-8 to the new twin-turbo 3.0 liter V-6 offering 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.
